Christopher Brown Arrested: Accused Of Making Threats Against New York Synagogues

It has been reported that a deranged 24-year-old man from Aquebogue named Cristopher Brown has been arrested for threatening Big Apple synagogues.

The suspect was caught at the Long Island Railroad platform at Penn Station late Friday night on November 18. Weapons, ammunition, and a Nazi armband were recovered in his bag.

He reportedly also had a ski mask, bulletproof vest, and a large hunting knife, among other things.

The unhinged suspect wore a T-shirt that read, “I have a gun, and I’m schizophrenic.” The phrase on the shirt was written in reverse.

The FBI/NYPD Joint Taskforce had been searching for Brown, a “diagnosed schizophrenic” who recently said to his family that he was interested in going to New York and buying a gun.

According to the NYPD, Brown was detained at 11:30 pm and charged with aggravated harassment, criminal possession of a weapon, and making terroristic threats.

NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell praised the law enforcement’s “sharp-eyed” action in the case.

The authorities “moved swiftly to gather information, identified and operationally neutralized their ability to harm,” Keechant said in a statement.

Given that online postings indicated an intent to use these weapons at a Manhattan synagogue, a potential tragedy was avoided when they were stopped by police officers at Penn Station, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

Christopher made several threats, which escalated on Friday, on Twitter. CNN reports that the threats started appearing on a Twitter account on November 12.

Late Friday, authorities traced the tweets to a computer at a veterinary clinic where one of the suspects worked.

The threats were said to include references to attacking a NY synagogue. “Gonna ask a priest if I should become a husband or shoot up a synagogue and die,” one post reportedly read.

Sources said one message referenced “big moves being made on Friday.” The message mentioned a time of 11:30 pm but did not give any specific target.

After being alerted about the online messages, the FBI and NYPD began what was described as “frantic efforts” to identify and locate the suspects.

It comes after a series of dangerous antisemitic comments and activities. According to the Anti-Defamation League, 2,717 antisemitic incidents were reported in 2021 across the United States – a 34% increase from 2,026 in 2020.

Another Man Was Arrested Along With Christopher Brown

Two men were arrested in connection with online threats made to attack New York City synagogues and were arraigned on multiple charges over the weekend.

In addition to Christopher Brown, Matthew Mahrer was charged with the crime. Court documents show that Mahrer faces charges, including criminal possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a weapon.

He was arraigned late Saturday. Matthew Mahrer is a 22-year-old from Manhattan, New York.

Cops also obtained a Glock 17 with an extended magazine. It was found in a backpack in Mahrer’s Upper West Side home.

Police believe Brown and Mahrer had been traveling together.

Brown was denied bail, whereas Mahrer’s bail was set at $300,000 bond or $150,000 cash, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said. A court website states that Mahrer bailed out.
