Authorities in South Carolina said that a convenience store owner had been charged with murder after reportedly following and killing a 14-year-old kid in the back after accusing the child of stealing.

According to Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, the youngster, Cyrus Carmack-Belton, entered the Columbia business at 8 pm Sunday and was approached by the owner, who accused him of stealing.

At his school, Cyrus was recalled as a bright student who was funny, quick-witted, and well-liked by his peers.

The details of their permanent residence are unavailable, but the place where he was killed is Parklane Road in Columbia.

The coroner added at the press conference that Cyrus’ one gunshot wound to his right lower back “seems consistent with someone who was running away from the assailants.”

According to Lott, the convenience store site has seen many stealing occurrences in the past, including altercations with business owners.

Todd Rutherford, the family’s attorney, declared himself “outraged” by the shooting. A Summit Parkway Middle student, Carmack-Belton received her eighth-grade diploma last week.

The district said, “The Richland 2 family is grieved to learn of the untimely loss of one of our Summit Parkway Middle School students.

Our hearts go out to the Carmack-Belton family during this difficult time.

Death And Obituary Of Cyrus Carmack-Belton

On Sunday, May 28, Carmack-Belton was shot and killed in Columbia near Springtree Drive.

Around 8 o’clock that evening, according to Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, Carmack-Belton was inside the Shell Gas station at 7441 Parklane Road when owner Rick Chow, 58, accused the young man of taking water bottles.

However, Lott argued this wasn’t accurate, claiming that Carmack-Belton had only handled the bottles briefly before re-putting them in the cooler.

Investigators said Chow’s son started pursuing him once Carmack-Belton left the shop. Chow is charged with joining the pursuit while carrying a weapon.

According to Lott, the victim slipped and fell during the chase near apartments on Springtree Drive, but he later got back up.

After the son informed his father that the teenager was armed, Lott said Chow had shot Carmack-Belton in the rear.

Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said the gunshot wound injured the teen’s heart.

Funeral plans have been made for Cyrus Carmack-Belton, a 14-year-old from Columbia who police believe was slain by the owner of a South Carolina gas station.

On Friday, June 2, from 3–6 pm, Belton’s viewing will be held at Leevy’s Funeral Home, which is located at 1831 Taylor Street.

The funeral will occur on Saturday, June 3, at Second Nazareth Baptist Church in Columbia, at 2300 Elmwood Avenue. At noon, the service is scheduled to start.
