Born in Sofia on May 17, 1972, Pampoulova had a tennis background within her family.

Her mother, Lubka Radkova, a Bulgarian player, served as her first tennis coach. Her father, Emilian Pampoulov, was also involved in professional tennis.

Elena achieved notable rankings throughout her career, reaching No. 62 in singles and No. 38 in doubles.

She performed commendably at Grand Slam events, reaching the third round at the US Open in 1997 and Wimbledon in 1999.
