In 2018, the French politician found himself in hot water after he expressed his wish to repair church-state ties. He was even accused of threatening France’s tradition of secularism.

As reported by Express, in a meeting of bishops, Mr. Macron said he hoped to repair relations with the Church via a dialogue of truth.

He explained, “A president of the French Republic, who doesn’t have interests in the Church and its Catholics, would be failing in his duties.”

Gérard Collomb, the city of Paris’s then-interior minister, backed Mr. Macron’s comment.

He explained: “What he’s saying is that humans are searching for absolute values, spirituality, and meaning in life in addition to the worldly world.

“It may have a new tone, but it in no way does it break from the great tradition of secularism,” Collomb added.
