General Pervez Musharraf, who served as the president of Pakistan from 1999 to 2008, passed away. The former Pakistan president died in a Dubai hospital after a lengthy battle with a case of Amyloidosis.

The four-star general became the president after the federal government’s successful military takeover in 1999. The former Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee has also served as the seventh Chief of Army Staff from 1998 to 2007.

The former president died after a lengthy battle with illness. The late politician, who ruled Pakistan from 1999 to 2008, had been living in Dubai since March 2016.

Last year, Musharraf’s family disclosed that due to a complication of his ailment – Amyloidosis – a rare illness that occurs when an amyloid (protein) builds up in organs.

He went through a difficult stage where recovery was impossible, and organs malfunctioned.

Born in Delhi during the British Raj, Pervez Musharraf grew up in Karachi and Istanbul.

He joined the Pakistani Army in 1964 and witnessed action in the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War. The former president was serving as a second lieutenant at that time.

Then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif promoted the retired politician to four-star general in 1998, putting him in charge of the armed forces.

But following a coup and tense relations with Mr. Nawaz, the former Chief of Army Staff took over Pakistan as president in 2001 after being in charge of the Kargil infiltration, which ignited the India and Pakistan war in 1999.

Furthermore, Pervez Musharraf received praise worldwide for his reformist initiatives. Those efforts include pushing legislation to protect women’s rights and allowing private news networks to operate for the first time.

Most notably, Mr. Musharraf maintained friendly relationships with the U.S. army establishment while serving as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs from 1998 to 2001.

Following the 9/11 attacks in the U.S., his appeal in the West soared due to his love of cigars and imported whisky and his encouragement of Muslims to adopt an “enlightened moderation” lifestyle.

Born on 11 August 1943, Pervez Musharraf is the second kid of his parents. Javed and Naved are his brothers.

The former president’s brother, Javed, is a former high-level official in Pakistan’s civil service. Likewise, his other sibling, Naved, is an anesthesiologist in Chicago. Naved reportedly completed his residency training at Loyola University Medical Center in 1979.

Moreover, the late politician was married to Sehba. Pervez Musharraf’s wife is from Karachi. The couple tied the knot on 28 December 1968.

The Musharraf couple has two children – a daughter, Ayla, and a son Bilal. The former Pakistan president’s daughter, Ayla, is an architect and married to filmmaker Asim Raza.
