Kurtaj was declared incompetent to stand trial due to his autism, therefore the jury’s task was to decide whether or not he committed the relevant acts—rather than whether or not he did so to commit a crime.

Kurtaj “had been violent while in custody with dozens of reports of injury or property damage,” the court heard during Thursday’s hearing, according to the BBC.

Kurtaj “continued to express the intent to return to cybercrime as soon as possible,” according to a mental health examination.

Until medical professionals conclude he is no longer a threat, he must be incarcerated in the hospital for the rest of his life.

Arion Kurtaj, an 18-year-old autistic man, was under police protection in a Travelodge hotel and on bail for hacking the software companies Nvidia and BT/EE when he carried out more hacking and violated the terms of Rockstar Games, the developer of Grand Theft Auto, the court heard.

Kurtaj, whose laptop was seized, used an Amazon Firestick, his hotel television, and a cell phone to carry out his cyberattack.

Declaring, “If Rockstar does not contact me on Telegram within 24 hours I will start releasing the source code,” he broke into the company’s internal Slack communications system.

On a forum, Oxford resident Kurtaj, a member of the Lapsus$ hacking group, shared the videos and source code.

Unless his doctors determine he is no longer a threat, he will be kept in a guarded facility for the rest of his life, Southwark Crown Court heard on Thursday.

City of London police have advised parents to monitor their children’s internet usage in light of this situation.

Kurtaj had been violent in detention, according to several accounts of injuries and property damage presented to the court. Due to his severe autism, doctors determined that he was not fit to stand trial.

The jury was asked to decide whether or not he performed the claimed offenses, not whether or not he did so with criminal intent.
