Karen Abgarovich Khachanov was born in Moscow, Russia, to his parents, Abgar and Natalia Khachanov.

He comes from a medical family with his father, Abgar, and mother, Natalia, having studied medicine. Abgar played volleyball before becoming a medical student.

The tennis star is of mixed ethnicity, as his dad is an Armenian from Abgar, the capital and largest city of Armenia, while his mom is a Russian.

Likewise, his maternal grandfather was also half-Armenian. Khachanov once tweeted: “I always say that I have Armenian roots,” despite being born in Russia.

Khachanov started playing tennis at the young age of three in kindergarten after being introduced to the sport by his parents. His idols growing up were Juan Martin del Potro and Marat Safin.

He decided to turn professional at 12 and moved to Slit, Croatia, at 15, training under Vedran Martić, Goran Ivanišević’s former coach. It was followed by his move to Barcelona, where Galo Blanco coached him.

In April 2016, just before his 20th birthday, Khachanov married his childhood sweetheart, Veronika Shkliaeva. They have a son named David, who was born in 2019.

Khachanov’s nickname is ‘Djan’; however, many call him ‘Baby Safin’ due to the similarities of his game with that of Safin.

However, with time, most observers have realized that Khachanov’s game is unique, relying on all-out power more than any other player in recent tennis history.
