Luka was born to his parents, Radojka Modrić and Stipe Modrić, in Zadar.

As a five-year-old, Luka spent his time shepherding goats while growing up in his grandfather’s stone home. His life was altered irrevocably by the Croatian War of Independence in 1991.

Then his family home was destroyed by Fire, but fortunately, Modri’s family had already left.

Luka’s family spent the following few years as refugees in hotels while his Father enlisted in the Croatian army as an aeromechanic. As thousands of bombs fell around him daily in Zadar, Luka played football for the first time. For the young boy, playing football was a way to get away. 

At age 16, Dinamo Zagreb signed him after noticing his potential with the youth squad of his hometown club NK Zadar. He continued to grow in Zagreb before going on loan to Inter Zapres and Zrinjski Mostar.

Luka began his professional career at Dinamo Zagreb when he was 16. Eventually, he found his way to Tottenham and spent many years playing in the English Premier League.

In March 2006, Modri made his Croatian debut against Argentina and scored his first goal against Italy in a friendly. 

When Croatia qualified for every major competition, including the UEFA European Championship in 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020, and the FIFA World Cup in 2006, 2014, and 2018, Modri served as the Leader of the country’s “second Golden Generation.”

Only the second Croatian to ever receive this honor, he was chosen for the Team of the Tournament at Euro 2008. Modric led Croatia to the 2018 World Cup Final after being eliminated in the group stage of his first two World Cups. He was also given the Golden Ball award for being the best player in the competition.
