He claimed that “with the internet, we are going back to having tribal attitudes toward music,” adding, “in the last century, only a few organizations have taken control of the music world and ripped off fans and creators.”

The first of Sakamoto’s three marriages occurred in 1972 and ended in divorce two years later, and he has a daughter.

Sakamoto later wed Akiko Yano, a well-known Japanese pianist, and vocalist, in 1982 after working with her on several musical projects, including a tour with the Yellow Magic Orchestra.

Fourteen years after both agreed to split, Sakamoto’s second marriage ended in August 2006. Yano and Sakamoto had one daughter together, J-pop singer Miu Sakamoto.

He has two kids with Norika Sora, his manager, and his wife, and they have resided together since about 1990.
