Tom Dees, a longtime television host from Memphis, passed away Thursday in Olive Branch, Mississippi. We are all grieving the passing of our friend and coworker, Tom Dees, here at FOX13.

Tom, the FOX13 News team member with the longest career, passed away Thursday morning at his home in Desoto County from an illness. On Saturday, he would have turned 58.

Following the breaking news that Tom Dees, a longtime reporter for the station, has passed away at the age of 57, FOX13 viewers in Memphis, Tennessee, are in sorrow. 

Tom passed away at his home on February 9, just a few days before his 58th birthday, according to a FOX13 story. Amelia, Ally, and Austin, the three children he had with his wife Cathy, are still living.

Tom Dees was admitted to the hospital at the beginning of January after having Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), a rare lung condition. 

He fought the battle in the hospital but failed and passed away on February 9th at age 57.

The news of Tom Dees’ passing startled many people, who have since posted condolences on social media. 

Tom was both personally and professionally genuinely enthusiastic about the Mid-South. He will be missed by everyone who knows him.

Tom, born in Indiana, spent his early years traveling with his family around the nation and even to Japan because his Father was a U.S. Air Force pilot. 

Tom completed his secondary school education in Louisiana, where he won the cross-country state championship. But I was from Mississippi.

Tom was an ardent and devoted Bulldog of Mississippi State. He earned his degree from MSU in 1987 and quickly began a career in television reporting.

However, his Emmy Award-winning feature reports and coverage of North Mississippi, especially his popular “Tom DEESoto County” pieces, may be what makes him most well-known.

Tom cherished North Mississippi and stood up for its major issues and minute details. 

In the FOX13 office, spring wouldn’t be complete without Tom pitching stories about the Clarksdale Juke Joint Festival, which he liked to cover.

Fall 1995 saw Tom start working at FOX13. He covered every story you could think of over the years, from the 2008 presidential debate at the University of Mississippi to his morning Road Patrol segments giving traffic reports on Good Morning Memphis.

According to his family, longtime Fox 13 reporter and Emmy-winning journalist Tom Dees passed away Thursday in Olive Branch, Mississippi. 

Dees, a writer from the Mid-South with 32 years of experience, was hospitalized at the start of January and was diagnosed with the rare lung condition idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

Words are inadequate to express our feelings for the family. We send the entire family our sympathies. God grants the soul of the deceased repose. Dees leaves behind his wife and three kids.

Tom Dees passed away too soon and without warning, leaving his loved ones, friends, and family in great anguish and sorrow.

He was found to have a rare form of lung infection. Initially hospitalized, he couldn’t make it through that struggle. His family stated that he was 57 years old.

As soon as the news broke, the neighborhood and friends expressed their grief on social media.

Tom was raised as an Air Force brat because their father was a retired U.S. Air Force navigator, and their mother was a retired teacher. 

Tom spent about a year in his hometown of Kokomo, Indiana, before relocating to Hawaii and California (the first time).
