However, Charles said that their relationship was doomed because he never knew what love was. He’d never been held as a child, and it felt strange to be held by a man. Shortly after, he got into drugs. He saw Jack occasionally and always regretted that it didn’t work out.

Since that early relationship, he chose to remain single as a loner. But then, he only focused on his career and lived his life.

Jack Charles was an Aboriginal Australian stage and screen actor popularly known for his advocacy for Aboriginal people, born on September 5, 1943, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Jack spent many decades in and out of prison as a heroin addict, which he ascribed largely to trauma that he experienced as a child as one of the Stolen Generation.

Charles was also a gay icon and role model for LGBTQI+ Indigenous youth, whom he encouraged to be true to themselves. However, after an early relationship, he chose to remain a loner for the rest of his life.

Uncle Jack Charles was the son of a Bunurong mother, who was 15 years old at the time, and Wiradjuri’s father. Jack’s great-great-grandfather was a Djadjawurrung man; he was one of the activists who resisted government policy at the Coranderrk in Victoria in 1881.

His grandmother, Annie Johnson, was an essential person in the history of the Murray River region of Victoria as she took food to families using her horse and dray when flew epidemics hit the local Aboriginal communities.

After a long time, Charles met his sisters, Esmae and Eva Jo Charles, while living with his foster mother. Later, they found another sister, Christine Zenip Charles, but six siblings were still missing. He met his mother in Swan Hill when he was 19.

According to sources, Uncle Jack Charles had a net worth of between $1 and $5 million. Jack was not only an actor but also a musician, a potter, and an Aboriginal elder.

He has credited with the landmark Australian film The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1978), Bedevil (1993), Blackfellas (1993), Tom White (2004), and Pan (2015), among others.

Uncle Charles received a Lifetime Achievement award from Victoria’s Green Room Awards in April 2014. He played the role of Uncle Paddy in Two episodes of the Abc television horror drama Wolf Creek in 2016.

Charles auditioned for the Australian Indigenous title character role in the television show Boney but was rejected because they were looking for an actor with blue eyes. 

In 2015, he played the character Chief Great Little Panther in Joe Wright’s film Pan. After that, Charles appeared in two episodes of the television horror drama series Wolf Creek.

Jake was nominated for a Helpmann Award for Best Male Actor in a Play for his performance in the play, which toured across Australia and Internationally.

Uncle Charles was very instrumental in establishing Indigenous theatre in Australia. His stage work includes Jack Davi’s play No Sugar for the Black Swan Theatre Company in Perth, Western Australia.
