The late photographer, Ans Westra, was born on 28 April 1936. She was the only child of her parents, Pieter Hein Westra and Hendrika Christina van Doorn.

Her birthplace was Leiden, Netherlands, where she spent some years of her childhood career, and later the Westra families moved to Rotterdam.

In Rotterdam, Westra began to study at the Industrieschool voor Meisjes. And on 1957, the late photographer graduated with a diploma in arts and craft teaching, specializing in artistic needlework.

After graduating, she left the Netherlands for New Zealand and became a naturalized New Zealand citizen in 1963. Since then, Westra made her career debut by working in various local photographic studios.

As mentioned earlier, her stepfather was the major reason behind her photographic career as he instigated her to make a career in the vocation ever since she was a teenager.
