Kento Momota is a Japanese badminton player who is widely famous for his skillful and relentless play style on the court. He has played badminton for a long time and participated in many big tournaments.

Yosuke Nakanishi coaches the left-handed player. Furthermore, Momota entered the Guinness Book of World Records for The most badminton men’s singles titles in a season, winning 11 titles in the 2019 season.

Besides that, Momota recently participated in the Indonesia Open 2023, where he played against Angus Ng Ka Long. In the game, Angus defeated Momota with a score of 21-8 and 21-15.

Kento Momota Accident: What Happened to Badminton Player?

The Japanese badminton player Kento Momota was involved in an accident in January 2020. Hours after winning the Malaysia Masters on January 13, the van which was taking the player to Kuala Lumpur airport collided with the back of a truck.

It was reported that the driver was killed, and two Japanese team officials were also injured. After that, Momota was out of action for a year, and people were worried about it.

So, during that time, Momota received huge support from people, and his well-wishers also kept the badminton player in their prayers.

Kento Momota Injury Update

Following the accident of Kento Momota in January 2020, he suffered some injuries which forced him to be out of court for a year. 

Reportedly, Momota suffered facial injuries in the accident, including skin lacerations and bone fractures. 

Initially believing he’d be out for two months, Kento later learned that he would require surgery for an eye socket fracture in February of the same year.

His hopes of a comeback at the March’s All England Open in Birmingham were dashed by an eye socket fracture that left him with double vision. Furthermore, Kento was worried about how long it would take him to recover. Meanwhile, he came back to training at the beginning of February.

After successful surgery, Momota came back to action and also talked about his experience. Momota said he was thrilled that his vision is good as ever. So, he came back to training with his club (NTT East). 

Has Kento Momota Retired From Badminton?

No, Kento Momota has not retired from his professional badminton career. He is still active in the sport and recently participated in the Indonesia Open 2023.

Meanwhile, the topic of his retirement came into the media after his accident. In September 2022, he gave an interview with Kimiko Jinnai, where he talked about the difficulties he had gone through.

During that time, Momota was asked how he would motivate himself. After that, his answer shocked many fans as he hinted that his career as a player would not be long as he had turned 28.

Furthermore, Kento didn’t even compete in the Denmark Open 2022 and French Open 2022, which created confusion among people thinking that Momota may have retired.
