In May 2011, Leon started associating with other individuals on Facebook interested in mujahideen in Afghanistan. In July 2012, Ralph and two others were convinced to be part of the Taliban, and later Al Qaeda, and started to train by playing paintball and firing AK-47s.
In November 2012, three people, including Ralph, were arrested while driving to Mexico, where they were to start their flights to Afghanistan. During that time, they had planned to conduct jihad and become Shaheed.
Later, they were charged in the United States District Court in Riverside. Furthermore, De Leon was in solitary confinement. In December 2012, Ralph pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. In September 2014, a jury found Ralph guilty of three of five charges; one of the charges held a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Likewise, in February 2015, Judge Virginia A. Phillips sentenced Ralph, and another conspirator, to 25 years in jail.
