El Chapo | Imprisonment and Prison Breaks 

Guzman was sentenced to 20 years and nine months in jail after being accused of drug trafficking, bribery, and criminal association. 

First Escape:

Joaquin bribed several guards and escaped from jail in January 2001, hidden in a laundry cart. His escape was said to have included around 80 people.

El Chapo was ultimately apprehended in February 2014 in a hotel in Mazatlan, Mexico, after police searched for him for 13 years.

Guzman was brought to a maximum-security prison, where he was held in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day.

Second Escape:

Guzman once again fled his maximum-security prison cell on 11 July 2015.

Security cameras last spotted Guzman at his cell’s shower area at around 11 pm. The only area of his cell that was not visible through the security camera was the shower area. 

He built a 1.5 km long tunnel from his jail cell to a construction area. The tunnel was well equipped with lights, high-tech construction, and even a motorcycle. 

Third Imprisonment:

Federal police arrested him in a stolen vehicle in January 2016. The police took him to a motel, where he awaited reinforcements and handed over to the Marines.

After being sent to Mexican maximum-security prison, Joaquin was extradited to the United States.

In the United States, Guzman was sentenced to life in prison and 30 years in prison in July 2019 on various charges, including kidnapping, murder, money laundering, and drug trafficking.

He is currently serving his jail sentence.
