Ovidio Guzmán López is a most wanted drug lord and high-ranking member of the Sinaloa Cartel from Mexico.

Ovidio Guzman, famed by his nickname “The Mouse,” is a high-level Leader in the Sinaloa Cartel following his Father’s arrest in 2016 and extradition in 2017.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control Department designated him as a “Key Lieutenant” of his Father, notorious drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán, and the Sinaloa Cartel.

Ovidio Guzmán-López was taken to a maximum security federal prison, Federal Social Readaptation Center No. 1 in Mexico and was captured during a bloody operation on January 5, 2023.

Ovidio, in 2019, was briefly detained but freed to stop his gang’s violent retaliation in Culiacan.

The newest seizure of the Cartel Leader occurs before a summit of North American leaders that will take place in Mexico City the following week and at which U.S. President Joe Biden will participate and where authorities will discuss security issues.

In October 2019, NCB affirmed that the government was embarrassed by the authorities’ botched arrest of Ovidio, highlighting the difficulties in combating the cartels that dominate significant parts of Mexico.

The military operation to apprehend Ovidio Guzmán-López, the son of Mexican drug lord “El Chapo,” allegedly resulted in at least 29 fatalities.

Ovidio’s arrest sparked a wave of violence as shooters started attacking planes at Sinaloa airport, leading cancellation of over 100 flights.

Why Was Ovidio Guzman Arrested?

According to sources, the arrest of Mexican drug cartel Leader Ovidio Guzman on January 5, 2023, sparked a violent retaliation by gang shooters and caused the airport in the city of Culiacan to close.

Security forces had apprehended the 32-year-old prominent Sinaloa Cartel member, according to Defense Minister Luis Cresencio Sandoval, who announced the arrest during a press conference.

“Ovidio was currently being held in Mexico City,” Sandoval affirmed. Three years after the government was humiliated during an attempt to detain him, he was finally apprehended.

Based on videos posted to social media appeared to show intense battle overnight in Culiacan, the capital of the northern state of Sinaloa, with helicopter gunfire lighting up the night sky.

What Are The Charges Faced By Cartel Leader?

The United States announced a $5 million reward for information that would result in The Cartel Leader’s capture or conviction.

Although the allegations against the cartel boss are unclear, he is just like his Father, who is incarcerated in Colorado’s Supermax, the most guarded U.S. federal prison, where he is serving a life term.

Times of San Diego confirms that Ovidio’s cartel is one of the world’s most powerful narcotics trafficking organizations.

The Cartel Leader has been accused in the U.S. of conspiring to smuggle marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine into America.

According to the State Department, Ovidio is in charge of methamphetamine production facilities in Sinaloa that produce “3,000 to 5,000 pounds” of the narcotic each month.

Additionally, according to evidence provided by the State Department, he ordered the killing of several people, including a well-known Mexican singer who had declined to perform at his wedding U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration attributes the majority of the fentanyl that enters the country to the Sinaloa Cartel and the CJNG.
