Mario Molina was a Mexican chemist born on March 19, 1943, in Mexico City, Mexico, and passed away on October 7, 2020.
He was known for his pioneering work in atmospheric chemistry and his role in discovering the threat posed by chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) to the Earth’s ozone layer.
In the mid-1970s, the chemist began researching the impact of CFCs on the ozone layer. He and his research partner, Sherwood Rowland, discovered that CFCs could break down ozone molecules in the Earth’s stratosphere, leading to a hole in the ozone layer.
Their research contributed to the signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987.

Who Is Mario Molina Wife Guadalupe Álvarez?
Guadalupe Alvarez is Mario Molina’s second wife. They exchanged their wedding vows in February 2006 and were together until the chemist’s death on October 7, 2020.
Previously, Mario Molina was married to Luisa Yturbe, a fellow Mexican chemist and researcher whom he met while studying at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
The former pair tied the wedding knot in July 1973 and were relocated to Irvine, California, in the fall of 1973.
Sadly, Mario and Luisa ended their marriage in 2005. Luisa Tan Molina is the lead scientist in the Molina Center for Strategic Studies in Environment and Energy based in La Jolla, California.
Furthermore, only a little is known about Mario Molina’s wife, Guadalupe Alvarez, as she avoided the media attention and limelight after his demise in 2020.
Hopefully, she is still working in the scientific field, considering her long-time experience as a scientist. Guadalupe has contributed to studying air pollution and atmospheric chemistry.

Moreover, the chemist was welcomed into this world by Leonor Henriquez Molina and Roberto Molina Pasquel.
While his dad was a judge and lawyer who served as Mexican ambassador to Australia, Ethiopia, and the Philippines, his mom was a homemaker.
Furthermore, Mario was intrigued by science from his early days, and he transformed a little-used bathroom into a laboratory in his home for his chemistry sets, helped by an auntie, Esther Molina, who was also a chemist.
Following the family tradition, his parents sent him abroad for further education.
Molina decided to focus on science instead of his other two interests, the violin and chemistry, and he enrolled in the National Autonomous University of Mexico’s chemical engineering program in 1960.
After studying in Germany and Paris, he continued his graduate studies in 1968 at the University of California, Berkeley, and earned his Ph.D. in physical chemistry in 1972.
