Mary Quant Husband Alexander Plunket Greene Was A Fashion Executive
In 1953, Quant met Alexander Plunket Greene, her spouse and business partner who is the descendant of the Irish musician Harry Plunket Greene. From 1957 until his death in 1990, they were wed.
She met Mr. Plunket Green, a well-born oddball (the philosopher Bertrand Russell and the Duke of Bedford were cousins) who, on the rare occasions he attended class, wore his mother’s gold shantung silk pajamas and played jazz on the trumpet — a figure straight out of an Evelyn Waugh story (Waugh was a family friend).
Alexander and a friend opened the Bazaar boutique on King’s Road in Chelsea, and his wife was the first buyer.
Then she began selling her designs there, including the miniskirt, and Bazaar became famous as a young people’s store.
He popularized her designs by launching a full Mary Quant collection called Ginger Group, which later expanded.
