Vladimir Makei was a politician from Belarus who oversaw the country’s foreign policy.
Makei served as secretary for the ministry for the departments of Information and Humanitarian Cooperation, Analysis and Forecast, Office of the Minister, and State Protocol Service.
Between 1996 and 1999, he worked as a counselor in the Belarusian embassy in Paris. He also represented Belarus in the Council of Europe.
In addition, from 2008 to 2012, he worked as Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus’s chief of staff assistant.
He assumed the minister of foreign affairs position on August 20, 2012. Makei was trilingual, also speaking German, Russian, and Belarusian.
During the 2020 Belarusian protests, Makei said at a Ministry of Foreign Affairs meeting that anyone who disagreed with the government’s position should leave the division.
Additionally, he forbade the staff from participating in protests. Two employees who used blank pieces of paper to create a picket were fired within a week.

Vladimir Makei was born to his parents on August 5, 1958, in Hrodna voblast, Byelorussian SSR. The foreign minister spent most of his childhood in the village of Niekraeviy.
