On October 3, Kevin McCarthy was removed as the speaker from the office, to which he spoke out in reaction.

Kevin Owen McCarthy, born on January 26, 1965, is an American politician.

He is a member of the Republican Party, and he represents California’s 20th congressional district. This includes most of the San Joaquin Valley.

Kevin was the 55th speaker of the United States House of Representatives from January to October 2023.

As such, Kevin McCarthy has spoken out in reaction to the recent dismissal and oust decision.

On October 3, 2023, Kevin McCarthy was voted out from his position as speaker.

This marked the first time in history that a speaker was removed from the role during an ongoing legislative session.

Unsurprisingly, Kevin McCarthy has had a heated reaction to his dismissal.

Various news outlets such as CNN, CBS, and PBS have posted videos where Kevin addresses the decision.

In the video, he says:

In today’s world if you’re sitting in Congress and you took a gamble to make sure government was still open, and eight people can throw you out a speaker, and the Democrats who said they wanted to keep government open… I think you got a real divide I think you got a real institutional problem.

The vote to remove Kevin included House Democrats and eight House Republicans: Gaetz, Ken Buck, Andy Biggs, Tim Burchett, Bob Good, Eli Crane, Nancy Mace, and Matt Rosendale.

Additionally, the reaction of Kevin McCarthy on Twitter was his exclamation, saying that he would not run for speaker of the House again.

He captioned his previously mentioned video, “I will not seek to run again for Speaker of the House. I may have lost a vote today, but I fought for what I believe in—and I believe in America. It has been an honor to serve.

Congress members have mixed reactions to his dismissal, with Rep. Doug LaMalfa saying, “By joining with Democrats, a small splinter group has removed the most conservative Speaker of the House we have likely ever had.

In contrast, Rep. John Garamendi wrote, “The majority of Americans do not support MAGA policies and former Speaker McCarthy was incapable of putting people over politics.

Kevin McCarthy’s Removal As The Speaker

The start of the removal of Kevin McCarthy goes back to September 29, 2023, when his proposal to finance the federal government encountered a roadblock.

It included significant spending reductions and stringent border measures but couldn’t secure enough support in the House.

Democrats and 21 hard-right House Republicans chose not to back it.

The stakes were high because failure to approve a funding bill loomed over them. This could have potentially resulted in a government shutdown on October 1.

Recognizing the urgency, Kevin made another move on September 30. He introduced a short-term funding bill that didn’t include the substantial spending cuts.

However, this bill also omitted funding for Ukraine. When it came to a vote in the House, 209 Democrats and 126 Republicans supported it, while one Democrat and 90 Republicans opposed it.

As such, the legislature passed the bill and signed it into law.

After successfully securing government funding with the backing of Democrats, he boldly stated that anyone was welcome to try to remove him because he was the adult in the room.

Subsequently, on October 3, Representative Matt Gaetz motioned to vacate the speakership due to his frustration with his cooperation with Democrats.

The vote on this motion concluded with 216 in favor and 210 opposed, resulting in Kevin’s removal as the speaker.

This was the first time in U.S. history that the House of Representatives removed its speaker from office.
