During the Muskegon County Circuit Court trial, Shana Vander Ark was found guilty of all charges on December 15, 2023.
The jury deliberated just over an hour before convicting her for the murder of Timothy Ferguson.
As autopsy determined the teenager died from malnourishment and hypothermia, the medical examiner ruled his death a homicide.
Moreover, a video showed Shanda becoming violently ill after seeing the photo of her son’s emaciated body.
She showed no sign of wanting to appear in front of the jury as it reached the verdict.
Further, Shanda’s attorney, Fred, argued his client did not grasp the harm she caused her son and did not know he was starving to death.
However, a Muskegon County deputy prosecutor, Matt Roberts, disputed that notation.
He said she tortured her son by feeding him hot sauce, putting him in an ice bath, depriving him of sleep, and locking the refrigerator and food cabinet.
“She killed him. She starved him to death,” Robert said.
Additionally, Shanda’s other son, 20-year-old Paul Ferguson, allegedly participated in the abuse and will face one count of first-degree child abuse.
